ANC CONDEMNS CONFRONTATION IN UMZUMBE The African National Congress condemns the reported incident in the Qoloqolo area of Umzumbe yesterday where it is alleged that members of the National Freedom Party (NFP) were attacked by people to whom they were distributing their party t-shirts as part of their election campaign in the local tavern. According to the information that has emerged, whilst in their campaign train in the area, NFP members entered into a tavern and distributed their t-shirts. It is alleged that an altercation between NFP members and patrons in the tavern ensued which led to a serious confrontation. The ANC notes the accusations levelled against the organisation by the NFP following this incident. We distance ourselves from this incident. We condemn it and we wish to make it very clear that the ANC does not condone any form of violence. However, the ANC leadership in the Lower South has been tasked to investigate the circumstances of this incident. If there are any ANC members who were involved, drastic steps will be taken against them. The ANC has consistently preached a gospel of non-violence and unity in this province. The ANC does not condone preventing other political parties from campaigning freely in elections. We once again call on members of all political parties and the general public to grant each other space to campaign freely ahead of May 7 general elections. We want to stress that we have a very good working relationship with the NFP and we will make sure that we meet with the NFP leadership to discuss issues that affect our organisations. Issued by the ANC Provincial Secretary Sihle Zikalala
