ANC STATEMENT ON THE PASSING OF ELIZABETH MBATHA The African National Congress and the freedom loving people of South Africa join hands with the Mbatha family as they celebrate life well lived of Elizabeth Buthiwe Mbatha. She was married to Professor Congress Mbatha, one of the founder members of the ANC Youth League. In 1943, Prof Congress Mbatha was on the committee that drew up Africans Claims and began meeting with the group of young intellectuals who formally organised the ANC Youth League in 1944. When Anton Lembede became Youth League president, Congress Mbatha was chosen as the Acting Secretary. Mrs Buthiwe Mbatha was one of the leading members of the young Womens Association together with Phyllis Mzaidume, Ellen Khuzwayo, Mrs Piliso and many others who served under the leadership of Mrs Madie Hall-Xuma (wife of Dr AB Xuma then President of the African National Congress). On two occasions she served as President of the Young Women Christian Association). The Young Women Christian Association was further enhanced by the incorporation of the South Zenzele Clubs. Mrs Mbatha is counted among those strong South African women who worked with Mrs Madie Hall-Xuma to break the barriers of racial discrimination. Mrs Mbatha, in her own right, contributed in the upliftment of women both in South Africa and abroad. She threw in a lot of intellectual contribution to women empowerment. The African National Congress salutes Mrs Mbatha for the unselfish contribution she has made in the efforts of women liberation, in particular, of South africa.
