ANC must fire Loyiso Nkohla The actions by members and supporters of the ANC Youth League, led by ANC councillor Yoliso Nkohla and expelled ANC councillor Andile Lili, today are pure vandalism and thuggery. The DA condemns this in the strongest terms. The DA calls on the ANC in the Western Cape to dismiss Nkohla with immediate effect and unconditionally distance itself from his recent inflammatory public statements and behaviour today. According to a newspaper report, Nkohla urged residents in a number of communities to loot the Cape Town CBD and to start erecting illegal structures in and around the city. He was quoted saying: “You will not have to go hungry because there are so many places that you can loot in the CBD. The police can’t arrest us all because there will be too many of us” at a public meeting held in Nyanga over the weekend. The DA will be laying a charge of incitement against Nkohla in light of the inflammatory statements he made and the subsequent violence and looting that broke out in the CBD today. In light of the recent Constitutional Court ruling that organisers of a march or gathering can be held liable for damage incurred by marchers, the organisers of today’s march should also be held responsible for the damage caused by looters. Today’s protest march to the Legislature was nothing more than grandstanding. The leaders of the march claim it was in reaction to not receiving satisfactory response from the Department of Human Settlement to earlier grievances. The fact of the matter is that the Western Cape Human Settlements minister, Bonginkosi Madikizela, at the time requested that more information be provided regarding their concerns so that the department could investigate and report back to them. Although the group undertook to submit a revised memorandum, they never did so. What happened during the protest march is unacceptable. It is a clear proof that these thugs have no real service delivery concerns and their actions are all part of the ANC’s ongoing ungovernability campaign in the Western Cape. The DA wants to engage constructively with all communities in the Western Cape to make life better for everyone. Unfortunately, the ANC consistently attempts to derail these constructive interactions with inflammatory political grandstanding as part of its ungovernability campaign in the Western Cape. We are committed to continue our service delivery to all communities in the Western Cape, no matter how hard the ANC tries to stop this from happening. All national reports confirm that the Western Cape is the best run province in South Africa. The ANC will not succeed in making the Western Cape ungovernable. The voters of this province will punish the ANC at the ballot box in 2014 like they did in 2009. Media enquiries: Ivan Meyer Western Cape DA Leader
