ANIMALS WANT TO TEACH US HUMAN RIGHTS “Animals want to teach us human rights”, this was what African Music Icon, Fela Ransome-Kuti, once said. This statement is more potent now in the 21st century than when it was made. The international community is becoming fund of making this accusation in reference to African nations. It is amounting to an insult. When Boko Haram sect members were killing people left, right and centre, the so-called international community was accusing the Nigerian government of not doing well enough. Now that the Nigerian government is tackling the menace head-on and on the way to winning the war against terrorism, this same international community is turning against the government by accusing it of human rights abuse. This is hypocritical. What is human right abuse? Where was the international community when blacks were loaded in ships like sardines during slave trade? Can the international community tell the world how many blacks died on the high seas on the way to Europe and America? Can the international community tell the world the level of abuse meted on blacks in Europe and America? When late MKO Abiola, of blessed memory, championed the crusade for reparation, he was murdered in questionable circumstances. What human right abuse are they talking about? When terrorists attack security agencies and innocent citizens in highly populated civilian population, what is expected of the security agencies? Should they have folded their arms and sling their guns and watch them butcher civilians? What the security agencies were doing and are still doing carrying out their constitutional role of protecting Nigerian citizens and properties nationwide. What has the international community got to say about the various wars that have been waged by Europe and America all these while? Did they not commit human right abuses? Who is reviewing their atrocities? Can the international community come out plainly and tell Nigerians what they want from us?
