ANNIHILATION I spent a good part of a Mexico trip getting bashed by waves -- stayed in a little cockroach hotel with an enormous wrought-iron gate and hired a taxi to the beach every day, hoping the driver would remember to come back at dinner and fetch me (he always did -- I bought him dinner and a couple cervezas on top of the cab fare; only once did he nearly kill me, careening at clifftop to avoid running over a giant snake which spanned our lane). The waves were something. Brown pelicans everywhere, aiming and diving; the sole human structure was a spindly taqueria with no customers at the top of the bluff. The sun and solitude drilled into one. Ive always been a strong swimmer, but it became an obsession to swim out into the break and get bashed and tossed and turned ass over taco day after day. I learned a great deal about big waves, which was a triumph. Getting bashed to pieces also annihilates stress.
