ANOTHER BAD BILL FOR RHODE ISLAND TAXPAYERS! In a demonstration of how fast Rhode Island lawmakers can and sometimes do act, a Senate committee on Wednesday approved a labor-backed bill to limit who can bid on public works projects moments after completing the first hearing of the year on the highly-controversial legislation. At its most basic, the bill would restrict those eligible to bid on state, local and quasi-public construction contracts worth at least $1 million to companies that have defined “apprenticeship programs.’’ The bill cleared the Senate Labor Committee on a 7-to-2 vote, despite the objections of the Rhode Island League of Cities and Towns (RILCT) , the Associated Builders & Contractors and the Oil Heat Institute of Rhode Island, among other industry groups. providencejournal/politics/content/20140312-rhode-island-senate-panel-approves-labor-backed-bill-to-limit-who-can-bid-on-public-works-contracts.ece
