ANOTHER INTERESTING LECTURE ON THE SOUTH PACIFIC (Solomon Islands) HERE IN JCU CAIRNS. Attend if you have time. Paradise lost? The status and future of East Rennell World Heritage Area, Solomon Islands by Professor Steve Turton School of Earth and Environmental Sciences JCU-Cairns I will document threats and needed conservation actions for East Rennell World Heritage Area, an imperilled site in the Solomon Islands. The site is part of Rennell Island, the largest raised coral atoll in the world. In 1998, East Rennell WHA was considered to have a high degree of ‘ecological integrity’, but there are now many threats to the area, including logging and associated invasive species. Consequently, in June 2013, the World Heritage Committee adopted a decision to place it on the ‘List of World Heritage in Danger’. Further threats include climate change and increased salinity of its freshwater supplies. Successful protection and management of East Rennell WHA is contingent on ‘buy in’ from the local people who own the land under customary laws. It would seem that the local people lack capacity to manage the property under the current arrangements. These effects are compounded by their isolation and a severe lack of funding, resources and World Heritage training. The seminar is at 4 PM on Wednesday (April 23). The Cairns venue is A3.2, the Little Crowther Theatre, with a live videolink to the Townsville Audiovisual Services Room (9-002). As always, FREE DRINKS AND NIBBLES AFTERWARD.
