ANOTHER TRIP TO THE ARCTIC: Stop me if you heard this before. - TopicsExpress

ANOTHER TRIP TO THE ARCTIC: Stop me if you heard this before. Another chuck of arctic air is sweeping southward through Alabama. We have seen several episodes like this in the past few weeks. Each arctic intrusion has a different personality. This one features a lot of wind. A wind advisory is in effect through the day and into the evening for northwest winds of 15 to 25 mph occasionally gusting to 30 mph and beyond. Our warmest temperatures today occurred this morning. Temperatures are now on the slide. By sunset, some places could fall to at or below 40. We are headed for the 20s tonight. In fact many places will bottom out in the lower 20s in the morning. Coldest wind chill readings will be during the night when mid teens wind chills appear likely. Afternoon highs on Thursday will barely climb to the mid 40s and we will fall to the 20s again on Wednesday night SECOND ARCTIC INVASION LATE WEEK: Dont look now, but here comes yet another taste of the arctic air arriving on Thursday. Highs on Thursday should reach the upper 40s, but that may happen in the morning. Temperatures will fall in the afternoon, again. Thursday night/Friday morning could be the coldest of the week. I think many places in central Alabama will fall into the upper teens, with lower 20s in the south. Some of the models are indicating some extremely low wind chill values overnight Thursday, perhaps down to about 10 or perhaps, in a few areas, even single digits. Fridays high will barely reach the lower 40s. A stiff breeze will make it seem colder. WEEKEND OUTLOOK: Looks like the dry pattern will continue, with storm systems sliding south of us in the Gulf. Look for a steady recovery in temperatures, into the low 50s on Saturday, upper 50s on Sunday and lower 60s on Monday. Although the rain chances will be small on Sunday and Monday, we will include a small chance, with respect to the storm systems passing south of us in the Gulf. LONG RANGE: We still dont see a significant shift from the current arctic conveyor belt, at least during the next couple of weeks. We will keep you up to date when we see signs of a significant change on the distant horizon. Stay tuned. --Rich Thomas, Doppler 12 StormVision Meteorologist Facebook: Rich Thomas WSFA 12 Weather Twitter: RichThomasWSFA
