ANTI TERRORISTS PATROLS WILL BE SUSTAINED - GOC The 7 Division of the Nigerian Army has pledged to sustain its robust patrols and operations in the rural areas in addition to protection of all urban communities in its Area of Responsibility. The General Officer Commanding (GOC), Major General Obidah Ethan stated this while receiving the combined team of senior officers from the Defence and Army Headquarters when they visited the newly formed Division in Maiduguri. According to him, the approach had proved helpful in the formation’s efforts at foiling terrorists attacks on citizens especially in the rural communities. Gen Ethan who also reiterated the stance when he received the Chief of Army Staff, explained that the formation had studied and understood the terrorists mode of operation and was taking appropriate measures to curtail the insurgents activities. The GOC assured the team that the formation was aware of its strategic importance and mandate in the area and pledged to live up to expectation. He said the Division had fully settled to action and was determined to accomplished its mission which include “seek, find and destroy everything terrorists” in its area of responsibility. Speaking further, the GOC said the formation finds the activity of the Youth Vigilante groups quite helpful and was committed to streamlining the extent of their involvement in the operations to reduce their vulnerability. He said the members were being profiled in collaboration with other security agencies in order to ensure proper monitoring of their activities. Responding, the leader of the Defence Headquarters’ (DHQ) team and Chief of Operations, Major General Paul Isang commended the Division for taking the bull by the horn as evidenced in the exploits recorded within a short time. He said that the DHQ would continue to ensure that the mission enjoys necessary guidance and support while the State of Emergency lasts. The Army’s Director of Operations, Major General Odunukwe Benneth who led the Army Headquarters team, assured the formation that although most of the logistics requirements had been supplied, additional ones were underway. He applauded the determination and high morale demonstrated by officers and men noting that everyone in the Army Headquarters was fully committed to their wellbeing and success of the operation. The team later proceeded to visit the deployments in Baga, Marte, Monguno and other locations and interacted with troops to ascertain their operational readiness. There were also consultations on some scheduled operations as the team also witnessed the conduct of some other ongoing ones designed to apprehend terrorists in the area. The teams have since returned to Abuja to brief the Defence and Army Headquarters accordingly.
