ANY DAY, EXPECT PUTINS INTERNET TO BE LABELLED A WEAPON OF MASS DESTRUCTION Media freedoms, the right of people to receive and disseminate information - these are basic principles of any democratic state and society. They must be strictly adhered to. - Vladimir Putin on this months episoide of This Old Commie #Like #Comment #Share I think the old Communist Putin has been watching too much of the great Libertarian Glenn Beck and The Blaze. He talks out of both sides of mouth, is inherently disingenuous and acutely politically motivated with a flavor for the absurd. Do the old communists ruling Russia think Americans do not read the newspapers and realize how Putins misinformation actions in the realm of Cyberspace are eerily similar to the Cold War tactics used by the old USSR. No one who can read should be fooled into believing Russia is not giving tactit approval to Russian hackers to wreak havoc on the American cyber infrastructure, financial institutions by stealing ordinary Americas personal financial information and funds. In light of this, Congress must act quickly to address Cybersecurity Legislation that is sitting waiting only for a Senate vote - every American should find Congress contemptuous, regardless of your political party affiliations. For all their tough talk on effective governance and prudent legislatives processes their inaction tells a far different story. Its seems to me that they are being bamboozled by their own rhetoric and thusly are acting much like Putin into deluding themselves that people actually believe they have others best interests in mind. While Putin talks about media and internet freedoms, he consistently is cracking down on internet use and access while also limiting the rights of the free press to operate freely and independently. With each curtailment making it more and more likely that in Putins digital universe he sees Cyberattacks as the most winnable front in which to wage war on the west. With the help of the obstructionists in Congress, one can make the case he is suceeding. Its seems that while all our enemies and adversies are taking steps to make their own cyber infrastructure more secure and less vulnerable to attack (while stifling free speech) our Congress is giving them freer access into Americas own cyber infrastructure. nytimes/2014/05/07/world/europe/russia-quietly-tightens-reins-on-web-with-bloggers-law.html?_r=0
