APAT NA ITLOG LESS ONE! Last Thursday morning, Pareng Natz ( ninong sa wedding ng aking anak) came to my office and asked Gigi (AO Lagarde), who was then eating breakfast with us, to come with him to San Vicente Bacolor, Pampanga to hear mass. After a few minutes, they left. That was the last time I saw him alive. Last night, around 7 oclock, I received a call from one of his cellphones. The (female) voice on the other line asked, Si tito Robert po ba ito? Anak po ako ni Renato Mendoza, she continued. I knew there was something wrong. And I was sure it wasnt good. Having NERBIYOS, I told her Im her tito Robert. Then, with a muffled voice she told me that her daddy suffered heart attack fatally. I couldnt believe my ears that I have to ask her her name (if she was really a daughter of Pareng Natz). I was requested to be the harbinger/messenger/postman of a very sad reality. Pareng Natz was one of the apat na itlog. The other three are Jovy, Rene, and yours truly. Pareng Natz I am sure will agree with me, if he were still alive, if I say he is somewhat a high profile person. Mayabang, maporma. Lacoste from head to foot. Parang braggart. Pero kumakana. He was one person who cannot be or who did not like to be outdrawn, lalo na sa gastusan. What he said, he did it with actions. I remember I was traveling along the magadike when suddenly smoke spewed out of the hood of my battered car. I stopped and opened the hood. The engine had overheated because there was a leak on the oil tube. That was a very hot afternoon. I tried to call my mechanic but he was out of town. I called up Pareng Natz and after 30 minutes he came over, with a mechanic to boot. There were some spare parts that needed to be replaced. He left with the mechanic and he assured me he will come back. It took almost one hour before they came back.. with all the brand new spare parts (ALL FOR FREE). Pareng Natz stayed until my car was able to run. And it was already getting dark. Pareng Natz, mayabang ka talaga. You left us without a hint of warning. While I miss you this early of your journey, though, I would not want to follow in your footsteps prematurely. AYOKO MUNA, PARE. ILAKAD MO AKO KAY GOD. ALAM MO NAMAN ANG PAPEL KO SA PAMILYA. May God bless you soul, pare!
