APC Congresses: Edo Central, North settle for consensus. Edo South votes candidates EKPOMA -The rescheduled All Progressive Congress (APC) ward congresses held yesterday across Edo Central and Edo North Senatorial Districts of Edo State, with majority of ward executives emerging through consensus arrangements. It would be recalled that the congress, earlier scheduled for last Saturday was shifted to Tuesday, following late arrival of materials and unresolved issues among party members. In Edo Central, comprising Esan West, Esan Central, Esan North East, Esan South East and Igueben Local Government Areas, the exercise went on peacefully following series of meeting held to reach consensus between opposing factions. Of the 10 wards in Esan West Local Government Area, voting was held in only wards six and four, where the rival factions could not harmonize. Similarly in Edo North, made up of Akoko-Edo, Etsako West, Etsako East, Etsako Central, Owan West and Owan East, ward officers were elected through consensus agreements. Speaking after the congress in Arokho ward 7, the Chairman of the Owan East, Mr. Jimoh Ijiegba confirmed that ward officers emerged as a result of consensus agreement among party members. “We the people of APC in Owan East decided to sit down and agree together which is the new innovation in our party constitution for consensus building. We agree in all the wards across the local government area and we had the congress by way of consensus. The majority of minds of members of the party agreed and that is exactly what you are seeing here’’ he said. At Otuo, ward 9 of Owan East, the member representing Owan Federal constituency, Hon. Pally Iraise, described the congress as peaceful and attributed it to the matured disposition of party members. “We are happy it was peaceful as you can see democracy had taken its roots in the country. We thank God for the peaceful nature of the exercise. The consensus was unanimously agreed by every quarters that makes up the ward because everybody was given a chance to nominate persons from its quarters. It was very peacefully,” he said. Others, who spoke with The NIGERIAN OBSERVER, including the member representing Akoko-Edo at the Federal House of Representatives, Hon. Peter Akpatasi, and state legislator representing Owan East Constituency, Hon. Folly Ogedegbe, also adjudged the exercise as impressive and peaceful. In Orhionmwon Local Government Area and Benin City Metropolis in Edo South Senatorial District, the ward congresses were held in a relatively peaceful atmosphere. In all polling centres visited as early as 8.30am, enthusiastic APC members were seen waiting patiently for the arrival of officials that would preside over the congress. When the congress finally commenced at about 10am in most centres, the party members conducted themselves in an orderly manner in the conducive atmosphere that pervaded the entire centres. As at press time, results were still being expected in the election with option A4 system. Speaking with the media, Chairmanship candidate for ward 2 in Oredo Local Government Area, Mr. Edosomwan Osagie commended the peaceful conduct of the congress. While urging winners to carry every one along in the conduct of affairs of the party, he also urged would be losers to take their defeat in the spirit of sportsmanship and support the new executive to succeed.
