APC GOVERNORS LAMBASTED! #Labour Upbraids Fashola, Fayemi Over Calls for Wage Deregulation# The organised labour has berated Gov. Babatunde Fashola (SAN) and his Ekiti State counterpart, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, for their call for the decentralisation of the national minimum wage. It warned Nigerian workers to beware of the governors, who masquerade as progressives but take delight in implementing anti-workers policies in their respective states. Fashola and Fayemi had last Friday called for the decentralisation of wages in spite of the position of labour leaders that labour and related issues including wages should be retained in the Exclusive Legislative List in the 1999 Constitution. Reacting to the governors’ call, the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN) said it was surprised that both governors had joined the league of those campaigning for the decentralisation of wages. A statement signed by the union’s secretary, Alade Lawal, pointed out that the governors were bias in their agitation as they did not see the need to campaign for the decentralisation of humongous salaries of governors, local government chairmen and lawmakers at all tiers of government which are centrally fixed by the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC). The statement enjoined the governors to concentrate on ensuring the enthronement of fiscal federalism that require states to generate, harness, manage its resources and pay tax to the central government. ‘They are pained that the law compels them to pay N18,000 monthly minimum wage to their workers because left on their own, they would prefer to pay as little as N5,000 monthly or less if wage is removed from the Exclusive Legislative List and taken to the Concurrent Legislative List. If the two governors were true progressives, they would have accepted to pay their workers as much as N50,000 monthly minimum wage so that other governors could emulate them. “Indeed, if Fashola and Fayemi are committed to the fundamental principle of true federalism, they should have embarked on the rehabilitation of Lagos-Ibadan expressway instead of waiting for the federal government to repair the strategic highway. “At any rate, it is not on record that these two governors have sponsored any bill through their representatives in the National Assembly to initiate the process of moving the country towards true federalism of their dream,” the statement added. Speaking further, the union noted that “Fashola’s anti-workers policy was brought to the fore last year when he sacked medical doctors that embarked on strike to drive home their demands for improved welfare and procurement of medical equipments to enhance their productivity in the state hospitals.” The group equally accused Fayemi of stopping the remittance of statutory check-off dues to trade unions in the state, adding that these are no credentials of progressive leaders. “So, Nigerian workers and labour leaders know their friends and will speak loud and clear when the day of reckoning comes,” the union stressed. NIGERIA MASSES MUST SHINE THEIR EYES; PROGRETHIEVES ARE AROUND THE CORNER. APC- Anti-Poor Congress!!!
