APC: THE SMOKE SIGNAL At a time when survival is for the fittest in Nigeria when hope is almost lost, when honour does not mean anything. This is the time when business is no more busy. Unfortunately this is the time when many average homes can’t afford three square meals. It is easy to get discouraged when things are going this bad. But we shouldn’t lose heart because God is at work in our lives, even in the midst of pain and suffering. Just like the Survivor who survived all odds, through thick and thin to Survive. The story line of the Survivor, a film I ever watched several years ago has it that a ship crashed in Australia hours after takeoff from the coast of Panoroma and the only Survivor, the Captain walked out of the wreckage. He did not remember the explosion or the crash but 300 passengers and the rest of the crew have all perished. Keller as he is known in the film, the only survivor of the accident was washed up on a small uninhibited island. He prayed feverishly for God to rescue him and every day he scanned the horizon for help but none seemed forthcoming. Exhausted, he eventually managed to build a little hut out of the driftwood to protect him from heat and other elements. But then one day after scavenging for food, he arrived home to find his little hut in flames, the smoke rolling up to the sky, the worst for him had happened, everything was lost. He was stunned with grief and anger. Early the next day, however, he was awakened by the sound of a ship that was approaching the Island. It had come to rescue him. ‘How did you know I was here’ asked the weary man ‘we saw your smoke signal’ they replied. But for APC to provide that smoke signal to summon the grace of the Lord that will prevail on us a lot of caution has to be exercised in the conduct of all our activities. We should not be complacent with the fact that we have GMB in our midst or, with even the fact that the electorates are fed up with the PDP. We should stop deceiving ourselves because the days are far gone when GMB will just raise your hand up during a campaign meeting and victory is assured. GMB is a fine and honest man who can stand by himself anytime but the electorates are now wiser and better informed. They will not vote for you just because the party say so. We must therefore work hard as if our lives really depend on this election. We must reach out to all corners and crannies of the state if we are to earn the confidence of the voter. To all those who are contesting for political offices, especially those who are taking shot at the coveted seat, they should not allow their personal ambitions to mar our chances of winning the elections. I mean those 2 or 4 politicians who want to become President in Nigeria. This is because from what am seeing the picture is very gloomy. The fact of the matter is that there is only one office of the President which is going to be occupied by only one person so let us be the Muslims that we are by submitting ourselves to the Supreme One. It is Him who gives power to whosoever he wills and at the time he desires. So we should just keep the faith. Twitter @babangidaruma
