APC UNVEILS CODE OF ETHICS The All Progressive Congress, APC, on Thursday in Abuja unveiled the party’s code of Ethics, a set of rules governing the party’s activities. The party’s mission states that it is a party that is committed to a Nigeria that achieves its full potential and promises to work towards a nation that is economically and socially vibrant, peaceful, just and secure. Listed alongside the party’s mission are ten principle commitments by the party to the Nigerian people. These include the party’s commitment to preserve the Nigerian people which it believes to be the nation’s greatest assest and pledges to do everything possible to protect and preserve human life and dignity. The party also commits to uphold a Nigeria bound by the principle of freedom, justice, peace, unity and the rule of law and promises to pursue its objective of increasing economic opportunity for all citizens, social welfare and progress through a government led and private sector driven economy. Lagos state Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola, while delivering his opening remark at the commencement of activities at the event noted that no party in Nigeria had done what the party is doing today. “We in the APC seek to create a new future for Nigeria, a future without leaders who deprive the families that they are supposed to protect. A future where high prices of foods and fuel do not undermine families, where there will be jobs for all who want to work. We will do things differently through our code of ethics”. The governor observed that the current division which the ruling party had unleashed upon Nigerians does not augur well for national peace and urged Nigerians to embrace the APC which, as a party, has chosen peace. “We are tied together by what we believe. We believe that corruption will no longer be tolerated in our national life, we are here today to tell nigerians what we stand for, what we believe in and what we stand for, not in a political rally in the face of an election, but in a meeting place like this. We may be over 160 million Nigerians, speak many different languages, but we are still one Nigeria. We must be committed to one rule of law for every body. No freedom or true shared opportunity can exist in Nigeria when there are not enough jobs”. On the importance of the party’s Code of Ethics, the governor noted that when the party’s pathways become hard to navigate, that these set of principles being unveiled today, must remain the party’s guide, its road map for a new Nigeria and that those sets of principles differentiate the party from the others. “We can build a new Nigeria and not accept a government that cannot account for us and must change that government”. He berated the ruling Peoples Democratic Party for being unserious with the fight against corruption noting that a government that is serious with the fight against corruption will have resources to create jobs but that the ruling party forgives convicted corrupt persons and sacks those who challenge corruption. Leaders of the three legacy parties who merged to become the APC in a panel discussion at the event recounted how the APC was formed and gave a run down of the challenges which the parties underwent in the formation of the party that has grown to become the most viable opposition Nigeria had ever witnessed. General Muhammadu Buhari observed that if the opposition had not come together like they did, that the ruling party would have dealt with the opposition members individually and destroyed them. He averred that the APC is an idea whose time is now. “We need to come together to put good governance and leadership to manage tthe huge resources of Nigeria” Former Lagos state governor, Alhaji Ahmed Tinubu pointed out that having been in exile many times in his life, that the only thing he could count on at those times was his Nigerian Passport and noted that Nigeria should be the locomotive of manufacturing, promoting job creations for Nigerians. Ogbonaya Onu on his part, re emphasized that the APC is an idea whose time is now pointing out that since the registration of the APC by the Independent National Election Commission on the 21st of July, 2013, that the party had constantly grown in leaps.
