APOLOGIES FOR LONG POST, PLEASE SHARE. This is MIRTHA a beautiful Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla. Sadly she has now passed away as nothing could be done to save her from the effects of what is now believed to be the dreaded Alabama Rot. Her initial treatment was funded by another charity but they were unwilling to perform the necessary tests to confirm the diagnosis so we, her friends, assured her that if she took Mirtha to a different vet Torbridge Vets Bideford (01237 472075) that we would ensure that any additional fees would be covered. The outstanding vet bill is £668 and some funds are already pledged. If you feel that you could also contribute please send your donation via paypal to mirthavizsla@aol Here is Mirtha’s owner’s description of what happened. ‘Started with her being a bit off colour on the Monday. I had to lift her out of the back of the car. Next morning I saw under her chest terrible bruising where I had helped her out. Her gums and eyelids were white. Rushed her to the vet where they kept her in and did blood tests/gave her fluids. They said the tests had shown a massive drop in her red blood cells and they said all the blood results indicated poisoning (possibly rat poison). I never use any poisons and Mirtha is not a scavenger. We walk mainly on Instow beach where she swims. She came out of the vets after two days but deteriorated. They were giving her vitamin K and Panacur (in case it was lungworms). She went back in for about 4 days and carried on deteriorating. Her back leg swelled as did her stomach - full of oedema. On Monday she had to have a blood transfusion as her red cell count had gone down to 15. She is now home but very weak and her back leg is still badly swollen. Her gums are very pale and the whites of her eyes are blood filled. I am keeping her comfortable and we go back to the vet tomorrow to see if her blood count is improved. She has also been having very dark runny stools - I have to clean her up when she has been. Any input would be welcomed’. She was being treated by a vet designated by a local charity, however they have come to the limit of what they were able to do. At our urging, several of her friends assuring her that we would find the means to ensure additional costs could be covered, Lindsey took Mirtha to a dfferent vet for more tests, but by then she was very poorly indeed. A few days later we heard from Lindsey that they have reached the end of the road with Mirtha. These words were written on Lindsey’s behalf by two of her friends. ‘She has received great treatment and support and they have tried everything to help her but her red cell count has continued to decline and she is now unable to wee on her own so clearly her kidneys are not functioning and shes getting weaker. She, bless her, is still wagging her tail and happy to see her people but she is very obviously having a hard time and feeling very unwell. It has become clear that were not going to win this battle despite all the care given to her, and the love of her people, and support that has come from everyone whos been reading and worrying about her. Her human mum, Lindsey was with her on the day she was born and tomorrow she will be with her at the end of her journey too. She plans to bury Mirtha in the garden, in her favourite place, where she liked to sit and sniff the sea air, and where those who loved her can sit and talk to her still. Lindsey, we know that you love her dearly and will miss her terribly but, as you have already said, sometimes its down to us to make the hardest decision for the dogs who give us so much and who love us unconditionally and rely on us to do whats best for them. And perhaps being strong enough to know when its time to let them go is one of the most important of those duties. We will all be thinking of you and I know there will be many all across the country sharing your sadness and shedding a few tears for brave Mirtha, and for you. And finally, for myself, I want to tell you that you dont have to lose touch with the vizsla community. Since I lost Courtney, the warm-heartedness and generous friendship of many others who share my love of the ginger darlings has been a blessing. Stay with us. With much love, Claire and Janis, and on behalf of everyone xxx Final message from Lindsey: ‘Mirtha died at 9.45 today. (14th February 2014 – St. Valentine’s Day) She was lying with her head in my lap and I stroked her and talked to her while she slipped away. I loved her more than its possible to describe and she will be very missed. I feel privileged to say that she was part of our lives and I hope she knew how much she was loved by so many people. Xxx
