APPEARANCE SENDS SIGNALS “So Pharaoh sent for Joseph, and he was quickly brought from the dungeon. When he had shaved and changed his clothes, he came before Pharaoh.” Genesis 41:14. It is true that one may be wrong to judge others by their appearances alone. However, the way you dress and package yourself is a message to others. The truth is whether you realize it or not you are a walking message system. So, it is just human nature to judge other people by the way they look. Your appearance communicates different messages or signals. For instance it may communicate desires and intentions, just as a harlot communicates her desires (Proverbs 7:10). Not only this, it also creates a climate of acceptance and influence with people in high positions as it did in the case of Joseph in Genesis 41:14. The Vice President of a major employment agency once said that the hiring of 90% of employees is mainly based on their physical appearance alone. Besides, your dressing also gives the impression of seriousness or otherwise. Recently, a young man has been complaining to his Pastor that he could not find a job. So, the Pastor shared the complaint with a very enlightened person and said that the congregation had been praying for the young man to get a job. When the enlightened man met the applicant face-to-face, it was obvious to him why he had never been employed. His breath was offensive. His hair was disheveled as if it had not seen a comb in two or three days. His shirt was opened; revealing his stomach. The edges of his shirt cuffs were filthy. His shoes were unpolished. This young man obviously lacked the finances to dress expensively. However, it was no reason to justify his uncleanliness. You do not necessarily have to buy expensive materials to dress properly. Clothing covers 90% of your body, so package yourself to create a climate of acceptance with prospective benefactor, spouse and employers. Take your bath regularly at least once or twice a day, add a little perfume to prevent body odour. Wash your dirty clothes and iron them as at when due. Maintain a nice haircut; polish your shoe when going out. Wear clothes which colour combination is inviting, then add a little smile. You never can tell the people you will meet on the way.
