AQ: Let me start this by saying we do NOT spank. Personal opinion, it may work for your children, it doesnt work for us so please do not suggest it. My 4 year old step daughter has always had behavioral issues, and lately they are getting worse instead of better. This evening she went into the backyard to play without asking, not a huge offense but it earned her a timeout. Instead of sitting quietly she had a huge fit, and started screaming her head off, which resulted in her being told to go to her room. She screamed NO I wont you cant make me etc etc but then stomped down the hallway. I went to check on her and found her in my bedroom jumping on the bed. I walked her to her room, and when I went to check on her again she was playing with her toys. As a result I went in with a huge garbage bag and removed every single toy from her room. This resulted in a huge emotional response (which is what I wanted, I believe it is almost a requirement before a large change in behavior can be made) All the while I was throwing the toys away I explained that toys are a nice thing that little girls get to play with when they are nice and good (we dont use the terms good girl and bad girl, she is a good girl who has bad behaviors etc) She was at first mad and screaming, then switched to being upset and crying and then was quiet. I left the room with the toys and she started throwing herself against the wall, kicking and hitting the door etc screaming at the top of her lungs how she hates us and wants her toys back. I am at my wits end with this child, I dont know how to handle her or her tantrums and am expecting our 3rd child in 6 weeks. What worked for your child? The defiance and attitude is more than I can take right now. Sorry its so long!
