ARE THERE NO EQUALLY BEAUTIFUL DARK-SKINNED WOMEN ON OUR ISLAND TO BE SELECTED FOR THESE TEDIOUS COMPETITIONS? Sigh! Already bored with the subject but will press on before I fall asleep. Beauty queens from the Caribbean have impressed the Miss World judges on many occasions, but the biggest winner of the region is Jamaica. Pictured are in order, Carole Crawford who won in 1954, Cindy Breakspeare (1976) and then Lisa Hanna in 1993. Now in 2015 we have Miss Universe, Kaci. They all have several things in common: Jamaicans, women and not so black. So weh de Black woman dem deh? If we are representing Jamaica in these tedious competitions, surely, we should have African-Jamaican contestants SOMETIMES, as the group makes up 95% of the population? One of the few African-Jamaican contestants selected for international contests was Zahra Redwood, the Rastafarian sister who entered Miss Universe in 2007. And people seemed more interested in the fact that she was the only Rastah Princess who had ever entered the contest. Perhaps Jamaica selected her because Rastafari was at the height of being fashionable at the time. So I ponder as to whether we are selecting women of a certain type, based on the fact that these types have already netted the crowns and we are chasing additional ones? (Already sleeping)
