ARE YOU LES BROWN? THE SOCAL COYOTES WANT TO KNOW - YOUR OPPORTUNITY AWAITS TODAY AT THE DESERT PRINCESS (CATHEDRAL CITY) -- This afternoon when the two-time champion SoCal Coyotes host their first open tryout of 2014 at the prestigious Desert Princess Golf & Country Club, coaches will be thrilled if only a single Les Brown shows up. Les Brown? True story: Les Brown was a college dropout from Utah who had given up a small-time college basketball career to be a numbers cruncher for a private-equity firm in Florida. Yep, an accountant. But unfulfilled, Brown -- who hadnt so much as picked up a football in years -- showed up at a BYU pro day and blew everybody away. He had the fastest 40-yard dash time (4.43), the best vertical jump (39 inches) and the top broad jump (10 feet, 3 inches). I had the rest of my life to work, said Brown, who made it to camp that season with the Miami Dolphins. It was worth one more shot. The Coyotes, meanwhile, have an accountant of their own in record-setting quarterback Nate Lewis. In 2011, the former Cathedral City High School star and College of the Desert Most Valuable Player was out of football. After a broken collarbone ended his college career, he graduated with an accounting degree and headed back to the desert, where he married his bride Megan, opened a successful business and was raising his family. He gave a Coyote tryout one last shot, and the rest is history. Today, Lewis is the most prolific passer in AAA football. The 6-6, 235-pound passer holds all Coyote marks and most AAA records for yards, completions, average yards per completion (15.9), average yards per game (357.7), and touchdowns. Lewis has now thrown for 8,957 yards and 90 touchdowns in 25 complete games as a Coyote. Lewis averages a touchdown every 10 attempts. EARLY REGISTRATION, ORIENTATION and individual warm-ups will open at 1 p.m. at the Desert Princess Golf & Country Club. The tryouts begin at 3 p.m., under the direction of the SoCal Coyotes coaching staff.
