ARE YOU VOTING THIS YEAR? Many Americans will be going to the voting booths soon to elect a not just a politician, but a direction for the future of this country. Bearing this in mind I would like to share some information with you to mull over before you make a decision. Since 1980... Corporations after tax profits have gone up 239% Income for the top 2% has gone up 178% The overall economy has risen by 145% Middle income earnings have gone up 9% Ask yourself this, do you want an economy that works for working families? Since July of 2009... Gasoline is up 44% even while our dependency on foreign oil is down. And yet the oil companies receive tax breaks. Electrical bills are up 9.2% Ground beef is up 39.5% Milk is up 21.2% Bacon is up 67.8% Then there is the argument on raising the minimum wage. Not a single time in the history of raising the minimum wage has it hurt the economy. In fact just the opposite is true. In 2014 13 states have raised their minimum wage and they have seen and.85% job growth opposed to states that have not raised theirs to seeing a .61% job growth. How could we possibly be having this argument when the stock market is soaring, corporate profits are through the roof, and folks working full time or more cant make a living wage? Now here is something just for the ladies. Womens Earnings and Income QUICK TAKE Date: March 24, 2014 Earnings and Income of U.S. Women and Men • The median annual earnings for full-time, year-round women workers in 2012 was $37,791 compared to men’s $49,398.1 • In 2013, the median weekly earnings for full-time working women was $706, compared to $860 for men.2 • In 2013, the median weekly earnings for women in full-time management, professional, and related occupations was $973, compared to $1,349 for men.3 • In 2012, full-time working married women with spouses present had median usual weekly earnings of $751, somewhat higher than never married women ($594) or women of other marital status (divorced, separated, or widowed - $735).4 • In 2012, full-time working married men with spouses present had median usual weekly earnings of $981, significantly higher than never married men ($620) or men of other marital status ($815), or women of any marital status.5 • In 2013, Asian women who were full-time wage and salary workers had higher median weekly earnings than women of all other races/ethnicities as well as African-American and Latino men.6 Wage Gap in the United States • Based on median annual earnings for full-time, year-round workers, women earned 76.5% of men’s earnings in 2012.7 • Based on the median weekly earnings for full-time workers, (which excludes self-employed and full-time workers who work only part of the year), in 2013 women earned 82.1% as much as men.8 o In 1979, women earned 62.1% as much as men.9 • The earnings difference between women and men varies with age, with younger women more closely approaching pay equity than older women (2012, median weekly earnings), for full-time wage and salary workers.10 PAY EQUITY BY AGE11 Age Groups Women’s % of Men’s Earnings 20-24 89.0% 25-34 90.2% 35-44 78.1% 45-54 75.1% 55-64 76.2% 65+ 77.6% What does really mean for you gals? It means that on average you will make $500,000 less than your male counterparts. Hows that for a slap in the face? Total all the women in this country and youre talking about a whopping 30 billion dollars! So now the question is will you vote for a party that has always voted against minimum wage and would abolish it altogether if they could and has always voted against equal pay for women in Congress? Which party voted against ending tax subsidies for energy companies that have seen record profits and pay no taxes. At some point in time one must put aside partisan bickering and see the whole picture. Our economy could be in much better shape today if the Congress had just passed a SINGLE JOBS BILL through the worst recession since the Great Depression! When you go to the polls think about your wallet and whats not in it and why.
