AREA’S MULTIFAMILY HOUSING INDUSTRY HONORS THE BEST OF THE BEST AT ANNUAL AWARDS BANQUET The area’s multifamily housing industry celebrated its achievements at the Tidewater Multifamily Housing Council’s annual Associates’ Showcase, Awards Banquet and RAM Graduation July 18 at the Virginia Beach Convention Center. More than 625 members and guests gathered for the event, which is now in its 29th year. Merit Awards were presented to individuals for outstanding performance and Awards of Excellence were given to outstanding apartment communities in South Hampton Roads, competing in categories based on when they were completed. A special tribute was given to two industry leaders who recently passed away: Alan Nusbaum, chairman of S.L. Nusbaum Realty Co.; and Sharon Hamilton Taylor, a property manager with The Lawson Cos. and the long-time dean of TMHC’s Registered in Apartment Management (RAM) School. MERIT AWARDS Eight individuals were honored at the banquet for their performance in the multifamily housing industry this past year. They include: • Multifamily Executive of the Year Bonnie Moore, The Breeden Company • Gordon A. Poole Regional Property Manager of the Year Award Jenny Galligan, Kotarides Property Management • Peggy B. Cowan Property Manager of the Year Award Alexandra Hinman, Ripley Heatwole Co. Inc. • The Apartment Book’s Leasing Consultant of the Year Lauren Blum, Kotarides Property Management • Maintenance Supervisor of the Year Award George McMillian, The Lawson Cos. • Rebecca Hughes/Sam Shetsul Maintenance Employee of the Year Award Justin O’Keefe, Kotarides Property Management • Above and Beyond Award Ashley Galbreath, Signature Management Corp. • Associate of the Year Angie Lombardi, Young’s Flooring/Redi Carpet AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE In addition to the Merit Awards, the winners of the 2013 Awards of Excellence were also announced. Nusbaum Realty Co. First runner-up: Orchards at Belleville Harbour, S.L. Nusbaum Realty Co. Second runner-up: Wesleyan Place, Ripley Heatwole Co. Inc. • Communities completed between 1940 and 1949 Winner: Mariner’s Watch, Frye Properties Inc. First runner-up: Archer’s Green, Signature Management Corp. Second runner-up: Sterling Oaks, Frye Properties Inc. • Communities completed between 1960 and 1969 Winner: Birdneck Village, S.L. Nusbaum Realty Co. First runner-up: Woodberry Forest, S.L. First runner-up: Spring Water, The Franklin Johnston Group Second runner-up: Cambria at Cornerstone, The Breeden Company The banquet also honored the 42 graduates of TMHC’s Registered in Apartment Management (RAM) program. The graduates completed a 40-hour basic RAM training program in on-site management, the first step to acquiring the RAM designation, a Department of Housing and Urban Development-approved certification program.
