ARROGANCE OF A FEW IN A TIME OF COMPASSION AND MERCY I write this article as a concerned and loving parent to my son, Kim who studies in De La Salle Zobel (DLSZ). DLSZ lies within the Ayala alabang Village and for a long time has had a harmonious and symbiotic relationship within its community. Indeed many of its past and present residents are alumni and have children in DLSZ and as a long-time Lasallian administrator i would venture that their education there lay the groundwork for much of their success today. Recently however, a more aggressive governing board has demanded that DLSZ restrict the movement of vehicles aside from prohibiting the growth of the school in terms of enrollment. Some reasons cited were traffic, inconvenience, (“ayaw nilang nauusukan sila etc etc as if DLSZ was not at the forefront of a project Carbon neutral). Its not as if DLSZ has not done its part in helping as Bro. Bernie Oca’s letter to the AAVA president attests. But, unilaterally , AAVA has decided that they will color code the cars going inside the village (they already require yearly car stickers) BTW rumor has it they wish to jack up to 5,000 pesos to “punish” the outsiders...further scuttlebutt through the grapevine says that insiders in AAVA board will wish to recommend to DSZL and indeed non-Ayala Alabang Resident Parents (like the people from Laguna and elsewhere like Cavite) to enroll na lang in other schools not in their “precious village” like Lasalle Canlubang etc. So my family got the white stickers so we can only go in T-Th, what about MWF? Bahala na kayo..Carpool, bus them shuttle them to Alabang town center (ATC) where there was recent near kidnap of a DLSZ student. Bro Bernie correctly points out that DLSZ itself is the biggest member, paying almost a million pesos in annual dues to AAVA. He outlined in his letter the DLSZ steps in reducing the problem ,which is obviously easing. Besides the so-called inconvenience only happens in the early morning and afternoon. Indeed who owns the roads leading to the school? Is the so-called convenience of a few in the neighborhood more important than the safety of our children? The AAVA President replied that they are implementing their rules February 2 unilaterally despite the appeal to hold it in abeyance. Now DLSZ and the Parents Association are seeking legal recourse against AAVA, and I have volunteered my name as one of the concerned parents in the petition. In the meantime, for my part I will use social media (this was where the People Power volunteers in Cavite was born within the pages of FB), convince friends within Ayala Alabang (attention Drs. Ethel and John Anonuevo, Cynthia Talla, Tiger Garrido, Lenny Fernandez, Bien and Espie Cabral, Sandy and Roumel Litao, Manny Herbosa) to make the AAVA board change its mind, in the meantime, we will use other avenues (contacts through DILG, friends within government , the Lasallian Brothers and prominent alumni, church friends within St James parish and if need be media and people power). In a time when the country is readying to meet the peoples pope, Pope Francis and his admonition to us to look after one another ,the actions of AAVA are not just contradictory but indeed unChristian and smack of arrogance. We hope and pray that wisdom and humility prevails so that this situation does not escalate. I appeal to the Ayalas whose kin bears the name of this school and whose hearts I know are with us to help us in this matter. --Charles Y.
