ARTICLE EXCERPTS ON THE IMPORTANCE OF ACTORS COMMITTING TO STAGED READINGS: The woman commended the actors and the playwright for their ability to flesh out these characters and bring the situations alive in this type of setting – with little movement and no sets, costumes and special lighting. And that’s really the beauty of attending a staged reading: Seeing a play boiled down to its essence of language and how words are spoken. Readings like this happen all the time in New York City, but they are a more unusual opportunity for Cape Cod theatergoers. Cape Cod has its own wonderful actors to do other readings; CCTP brings in professional New York-based ones with credits from Broadway and off-Broadway to TV and film. One actress noted Friday that she was exhausted after the reading because she wasn’t allowed to move – that it was almost harder to convey what she could by speech and gestures without the release of physically moving around a stage. This CCTP process of performance-talk-back-rewriting has, according to artistic director Hal Brooks, helped to result in two-thirds of the more than 60 plays developed there going on to full productions somewhere. I wonder at the people who haven’t considered taking advantage of that unusual opportunity every July in the southwest corner of Cape Cod – or of other similar reading opportunities at other times of the year around the area. The style is not what the casual theater-goer is used to, but it’s eye-opening and still terrific theater.
