ARTICLE: Yesterday we reported that the Seattle Seahawks had shaved down their roster to 53 players in preparation for the regular season. Since then several of the players who were cut went on to be claimed by other teams. That list includes: - Defensive end Benson Mayowa: claimed by the Oakland Raiders. - Fullback Kiero Small: claimed by the Cleveland Browns - Offensive tackle Caylin Hauptmann: also claimed by the Cleveland Browns - Linebacker Korey Toomer: claimed by the Dallas Cowboys It’s a credit to Seattle’s organization that the players they cut are in such high demand across the league. The next round of roster moves for NFL teams is determining who will play on their practice squad. Last night the Seahawks announced eight names who made it: - Quarterback B.J. Daniels - Running back Demetrius Bronson - Wide receiver Chris Matthews - Offensive tackle Nate Isles - Tight end ReShaun Allen - Defensive tackle Jimmy Staten - Safeties Steve Terrell and Terrance Parks The NFL changed the rules this year and will allow ten players to be signed to each practice squad, so Seattle still has a couple of spots to fill. For my part I am most pleased to see that Matthews cleared waivers and will have time to develop and learn the Seahawks offense. At 6’5″ and 218 pounds he’s a size and a half bigger than the other wide receivers on the roster. If they can turn him into a reliable receiving threat it would be a big plus for the passing game. B.J. Daniels looked pretty impressive in the preseason and I was surprised nobody claimed him. My guess is that at this time next year he can become Russell Wilson’s backup if everything goes well.
