ARTISAN BATIKS by Lunn Studios Hand Screen Printing Even though this is just a 1 color product, a lot of care must be taken to do it right. Please notice... They print every other position so there is enough time for the dye to dry and not be smudged by the screen. When they come back through on the second pass you can see how they make position (registration) by watching the pointer attached to the screen. The screen aligns to the steel rail for one axis of registration, but the side to side registration is by eye. The white flag on the pointer makes the process a bit faster than just looking for the point. Their eyes quickly recognize the flag and can then look for the more accurate point of the alignment device. You can also notice (if your sound is on) the noise of their lifting the screen. The noise is the releasing of the screen from the fabric which is temporarily stuck by the stickiness of the thickened dye. You might also notice that when lifting the fabric from the table a noise of the fabric releasing from the table. It is actually glued down to the table to keep it in place while they work. This is even more important if multiple colors are screened in register. The ingenious hanging method is so multiple pieces can be produced and floated without touching during the drying process.
