ARTISAN BATIKS by Lunn Studios How many stitches per inch in your hand quilting? This talented fellow is one of our cap makers (pronounced chop and spelled tjap in the old style). He practices Pekalongan style and is cutting copper and twisting it to fill in areas that will become solid wax compared to lines. He uses a simple, clever device to control the depth of cut. After cutting he twists each tiny piece to create a spacer for filling in solid wax areas. The solid wax areas can not just be solid copper. They must allow the wax to fill in all of the tiny spaces to transfer wax correctly to the fabric. After making a strip he cuts it to fill in the outlines of copper where the art calls for solid wax areas. Really amazing to watch the process in person. Each cap takes 2-3 weeks to make. We must make duplicate caps or more depending on how much fabric will be made in each design.. The duplicates are not because the caps wear out but due to production scheduling and the difficulty of producing the batik fabric quickly enough for the quilt market.
