ARTIST STATEMENT Simon Cooper is an American artist based out of Savannah, Georgia. Growing up in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Cooper was highly influenced by Latin-American art and culture, which is still very prominent in his work. With a dedication to a modern and cubist style, his work is free from the bounds of traditional artistic practice and expands the possibilities of content and subject matter. His work has maintained a concentration in painting and printmaking, as well as a focus in illustration. Cooper earned his B.F.A in Illustration, Printmaking from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2014. The Meantime is a current exhibition by the artist Simon Cooper and showcases a variety of paintings and prints throughout his time spent living in Savannah. The meantime is the intervening time between one occasion and another and this is a time for reflection and a time to expand one’s thoughts. Walks through the various parks and streets of Savannah give the mind an opportunity to make sense of one’s thoughts and to center yourself in the present moment. The chance encounters during a walk and a visual involvement within a city is greatly influential to how artwork is created. The colors of the buildings, the movement along the streets, and the experience as a whole are all key aspects among my work. The works presented are a response the walks and experiences involved in the meantime.
