ARUSHA CITY READY FOR BOXING TOURISM BONANZAS By Onesmo Alfred McBride Ngowi ARUSHA CITY, TANZANIA, the land of Kilimanjaro, Zanzibar, Serengeti and Ngoringoro: The East Africa Community headquarters is seated near the Arusha International Conference Center (AICC) in the northern Tanzanian tourist circuit. International Criminal Court of Rwanda (ICTR) as well as several international organizations are headquarters in this Maasai City of Arusha. Nicknamed “The Geneva of Africa’ for its reputation for hosting many international conferences, Arusha City is now preparing to host major “Boxing Tourism Bonanzas”. The bonanzas, the brainchild of the Mayor of Arusha, His Lordship Gaundence Lyimo and one of Arusha City’s prominent businessman Mr. Roman Chuwa, who owns both Equatorial Safari Tours and Kiboko Tourist Camp at Lake Manyara, aim at making Arusha City the “Las Vegas of Boxing Tourism in East Africa. Sandwiched between two tallest mountains in the world Mt. Meru and Mt. Kilimanjaro, Arusha City is strategically located along the Cape Town to Cairo Highway and a stone throw to several Tanzanian fabulous animal sanctuaries, the Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti, Arusha National Parks Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Momela and Soronera to mention only a few! Rising from the unmistakable splendors of tourism and charisma of inbound tourists. Arusha City would accommodate a number of Boxing Tourism tournaments and it is evidently seemed to have enticing its people already! Speaking to reporters at the Kibo Palace hotel, when he was hosting the Kenyan delegation led by Hon. Ruben Ndolo Mayor Lyimo said that, the city has resolved to take its imagine to the next level. “We are known for our aggressiveness to market and this was evident during the recently major events like the Leon Sullivan conference, Bill Clinton and Nelson Mandella’s visit” said His Lordship mayor Lyimo through Counselor Apollo. The city is on the tentative discussion with various stakeholders to prepare itself for this great events. Mayor Lyimo said that the city has invested a lot toward building capacity for the youth. Arusha City want to encourage Arusha youth to start sustainable income generating ventures based on tourism. In the rejoinder, Hon. Ndolo assured Mayor Lyimo that he would bring over the Commonwealth Boxing African zonal titles to Arusha so that the city can play host to these exciting events. Ndolo who was offered an office in Arusha when he become the President of CBC, would spend much time in commuting between Arusha City and Nairobi City in his efforts to promote both CBC African zonal Titles and Arusha as the Las Vegas of Boxing in East Africa!
