ASHEVILLE — A 75-year-old woman was struck and killed in a traffic accident Monday in southern Buncombe County. Anna Gibbs, of Hendersonville, died at the scene of the 6:20 a.m. accident on Mills Gap Road near the Sweeten Creek Road intersection, Highway Patrol Trooper Kelly Rhodes said. Gibbs was riding on the back of a motorcycle driven by her stepson, Dalton Foster, 42, when the motorcycle ran out of gas, Rhodes said. Foster let Gibbs off the bike and coasted down a hill to a nearby gas station. Gibbs then began walking and was in the eastbound lane of the road when she was struck by a 2005 Toyota passenger car driven by Annette Jennings, 57, of Asheville, the trooper said. The accident happened before daybreak and while it was raining, Rhodes said. Gibbs and Dalton were on their way to a medical clinic when the motorcycle ran out of gas. Investigators found no indication that Jennings was exceeding the 45 mph speed limit, Rhodes said. The investigation is ongoing, and no decision has been made about possible charges, he said.
