ASK AND RECEIVE TWO YOUNG PRIESTS SPEND A LARGE PART OF THEIR DAY PRAYING. Both are passionate smokers and question the correctness of combining these activities. Independent from each other, they write the Pope asking his opinion on the matter. The Pope returns both letters with an answer; one priest receives an affirmation, while the other gets a denial. Comparing their responses, the one who had gotten the denial had written: Dear Holy Father: Is it all right to smoke while I pray? Absolutely not! was the answer. The priest who had received the Popes approval had written: Dear Holy Father: Is it okay to pray while I smoke? The colorful center in the painting glorifies life and thought. Unquestioned lives that blindly accept daily circumstances are compared to the futile efforts of Sisyphus (found in the right foreground), who according to Greek mythology was doomed forever in Hades to roll uphill a heavy stone which always rolled down again.
