Could it be that we are meant to struggle through the sublime and absurd experiences we encounter here in this thing called life for some purpose? Now, I have shared with you the analogy of Joseph’s situation in the hope that you might more easily perceive that often times what we perceive to be reality may or may not be true. More importantly, our lives may be adversely affected by our misperceptions. Many Pasts Most people perceive they have one past. The reality is that we have two pasts—the real past and the expected (or ideal) past. Many may argue that only the real past is true, yet consider how even these same people live lies based upon what was their “expected” past and not on what was their real past. * The fact is we all may spend time thinking about and comparing our “two pasts;” as if we could change our real past or who we are (or became) as a result of them. It is important for us to recognize that, yes, we have two pasts; but they will always remain separate. We can not make the two come together and we should not deceive others or ourselves by confusing the two pasts. Neither should we define ourselves by them—separately or amalgamated. Happiness=Reality/Expectations I spent a considerable amount of time comparing reality with expectations in order to affirm a very important law in life. Tuck this pearl behind your eyes where you can use it forever—happiness is reality divided by expectations. Most people believe you can not define happiness; they’re wrong. With some examples, you’ll come to better understand the equation. Suppose I were to hire you and told you that I would pay you $1,000,000 per year to work 40 hours per week at an easy job. (For those of you who already earn more, let’s just say $1 million more than you now make and you will have more fun doing it). Already, most of you should be happy because you expected less than this. Now, suppose you accept the position; you receive your first paycheck two weeks later; and you calculate the pay to be $750,000. You would be really unhappy. Conversely, if you had accepted the position with the expectation of only receiving $500,000 per year and then calculated the pay to come out to $750,000 per year, you should be very happy. The pay scale turned out to be the same in both cases but one is happy and the other is unhappy because of their pre-employment perceptions or expectations. Emotional happiness can be defined in the same manner. If one expects a lot of love and attention, yet only receives a little, there will be much less happiness than if a lot of love and attention is received; or, if less love and attention is expected. Therefore, let us proceed in life with this law firmly planted in our minds so that when we perceive unhappiness, we can plug in our perceptions of reality and perceptions of our expectations into the equation and then ask ourselves; “Which do I need to address?” --from the “New Model of Addiction” Addiction is Now Understandable, Preventable, and Treatable!
