ASLAN STUDENT WEEKLY DISCUSSIONS For the week of: January 27th – 31st 2014 Monday - Friday DIRECTIONS: On a separate status posting for each discussion prompt, fully answer all of the questions in a well defined, 3 to 5 paragraph essay using your own words. Your initial postings for all discussion prompt questions are due by WEDNESDAY. Students MUST respond to at least one other student’s posting by posting a comment by THURSDAY from the same week. Include the URL for all of your sources. • DISCUSSION 1: Aslan Message Review Go to the website, and once again, take the time to listen to the Starlight Message for 2014. It will be offline as of January 31st. Listen carefully to the message and all the stories. What is the most important teaching you get from this message and what story helps to uphold it for you? Have you already begun practicing the message and its five questions? If so…how? If not…why not? How do you think the term “starlight” fits in with this message? How does the message and the entire talk affect you emotionally, spiritually and mentally? • DISCUSSION 2: Living Wisdom Listen to a reading of “Decently and Honorability” from Prof. Kafferly’s book “Living Wisdom” https://soundcloud/aslan-high-school/living-wisdom-contemplation-2 You may need to listen two or three times to absorb and contemplate the teaching. What is the reading about exactly? What did you learn from the reading? How can you better yourself from this information and apply it to your own life? What type of people do you think would benefit most from this? When and where can this teaching be done? What is your own educated opinion about it? • DISCUSSION 3: Chinese New Year Go to the website and click on “Chinese New Year”. When does this New Year typically happen each year? Does it follow a certain calendar? What date is it this year? Who and how did this New Year begin – what is its history? What are the traditional ways to celebrate the New Year? Why does each year celebrate and honor a different type of animal? What is 2014 the year of? Explain the animal for this year. What else can YOU tell us about the Chinese New Year?
