ASSEMBLY DISTRICT 1 (Part of Clark County) Roger “Oz” Baum (vs Marilyn Kirkpatrick, Incumbent) Email: Roger_baum@tototoooinc Website: tototooinc Please post a short personal resume: Roger Stanton Baum is a best-selling children’s book author and the great grandson of L. Frank Baum, creator of the original O book series. Roger has followed in the hallowed footsteps of his ancestor by creating nineteen books to date about the magical Land of Oz. Two of his titles have been made into animated musical movies. The Lion of Oz by Sony and Legends of Oz – Dorothy’s Return. Roger also worked in the financial industry as a stock broker back in the 1960’s. He is also a guest teacher for the Clark County School District. Roger and his wife live in North Las Vegas along with their Cairn Terriers. 1. This seat is currently held by an experienced Democrat legislator. Define your strengths and why you would better serve Nevada than your opponent. My strengths include among other things the over whelming desire to put my vast experience to use for our school districts as the 3rd leading author of children’s books in the US and is someone who is committed to remaining in touch with his constituents and listens to their needs. I feel it really doesn’t matter to have vast experience in public office, what does matter, is to listen and follow through on the needs and desires of our community. I find this lacking today under our current leaders. 2. Explain how you differ from your opponent in regards to: a. Nevada health care issues – I obviously differ by my intense desire to include the availability of affordable health care for all our citizens. The problem at the moment is, there has been little to no planning in this area for district1. b. The Education Tax Initiative – Needs to be explored by all of us. It is certainly a budget problem that needs to be thoroughly discussed and solved by those concerned. Unfortunately, to date we have seen little in the way of proper budgeting. c. Nevada Mining & Gaming Tax issues – efforts to increase both, while including removing the constitutional cap on the mining tax. I thoroughly believe we have enough taxes. People and Corporations are over taxed. I would like to see us grow monetarily by a competitive society that will create more revenue. Indeed that is the history of our great country and it must continue, without the need for more government and more taxes. d. Nevada’s minimum wage - Our state needs to attract good people that will stay in their positions and create the experience needed for the best possible service to the public. I would support a small increase in the minimum wage, but not so great as to substantially increase the costs of our goods and services. e. Immigration issues – First we must secure our boarders before we can do anything else about immigration. The money we are spending now on people, who have already broken our laws, by coming here illegally, takes away from the goods and services monetary support of our own children, schools and particularly our elderly citizens. Our country is on the verge of bankruptcy now. 3. As a new State Assemblyman what do you believe will be your greatest challenges? Elaborate. My greatest challenge is to educate our young families to the facts of today’s domestic and international tragedy’s as they are played out in front of us at the moment. We need to discuss why Nevada is last in the education system of all states. I don’t believe our current Representative is doing enough in the vital area. My plan is to sit down and discuss how we can improve our education system with community meetings of our educators and parents, including corporations who, I’m sure would be pleased to lend a hand in this currently overlooked area. 4. It is a long campaign season. Many accusations are made by one candidate against another. Are there any assertions/accusations made by your opponents, or others, that you consider inaccurate or unfair? Elaborate. Fortunately, I haven’t heard any negatives directed towards my campaign. I have heard an overwhelming amount of encouragement. All of us have not heard from our Representative in weeks. 5. Please us this space to elaborate on any issue not previously covered: Yes, the safety of our school zones is one of those things that needs attention. We are fortunate that a real tragedy has not occurred in the last few months. Editor’s Note: All Republican candidates with a viable opponent and contact information were asked to participate in an online interview – Congressional, Statewide & Legislative General Election races. The interview responses will be posted in full, unedited as submitted on NewsDesk by Nancy Dallas (ndbynd), the NvFRW website (nvfrw.org) and the State Republican Party (nevadagop.org); and, when relevant, the Carson City Central Committee website (ccrccgop), the CCRW website (ccrwclub.org) and all other GOP associated websites that wish to do so. Hopefully, the responses will be emailed to the membership of each organization, with reposting of any interview by interested parties strongly encouraged. The purpose of these interviews is to allow our Republican candidates the opportunity to state their positions in their own words, describe how they differ from their opponent’s positions and why they would better serve Nevada than their opponent. The Primaries are over. Our ultimate goal must now be to elect or re-elect Republicans. Not all candidates chose to respond. Following the General election a participation summary will be posted.
