ASUP Strike - NANS Protest Grounds Osogbo for Four Hours Osogbo — Vehicular movement was grounded to a halt in Osogbo, capital of Osun State on Monday as students under the aegis of National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS) blocked a major road in the commercial nerve center of Osogbo to demonstrate their anger over the ongoing strike by lecturers in the state owned polytechnics and Colleges of education. The Chairman of Osun State axis of NANSs Join Campus Committee, Mr. Awowole Samuel while addressing the students during the protest said government must address the issue as a matter of urgency so that their lecturers would go back to work. The students in their demands also urged the state government to recruit more teaching staff for the state owned higher institutions and provide adequate learning equipments in the state owned polytechnics and colleges of education. According to the students, we are compelled to troop out again as a result of the incessant strike by our lecturers which led to the continuous closure of our schools. Sadly, Osun state government has done little or nothing to persuade our lecturers to go back to work. The students protest which started at 8:20 a.m. was eventually dispersed by the police at 12:16 p.m. after all effort to persuade the students to end the protest failed. Osun State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Maishanu spent several hours with the students appealing to them to open the road and allow vehicles to move but the students refused to yield to his demands. Speaking on the development, the state Commissioner for Information, Hon. Sunday Akere said as a government, we are doing all our possible best to resolve the impasse. We met with the leadership of students over the weekend, so we did not expect the protests this morning. We are still holding meetings with their leaders. We appeal to the students to remain calm.
