ASUU: Reps promise supplementary budget to end strike The House of Representatives said on Thursday that it was ready to approve a supplementary budget if it would end the strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities. Speaker, Mr. Aminu Tambuwal, said this after the House was briefed on efforts by its Committee on Education to end the strike. The speaker appealed to the Federal Government and the striking lecturers to quickly reach an understanding and suspend the strike, observing that the country would pay dearly for the lost academic time in the future if the strike was allowed to continue. Tambuwal added, “Let me use this opportunity to appeal to both the Executive arm and the authorities of ASUU to please quickly resolve the problem. “And if there is need for any appropriation, the House will expeditiously assent to it in the interest of our students and the nation.” In a separate resolution, the House asked its Joint Committee on Police Affairs, Federal Road Safety Commission, and Justice to investigate the relevance of the Biometric Central Motor Registration of the Nigeria Police Force. The police introduced the BCRMR last month, saying that it was a counter-terrorism measure. The police directed vehicle owners to pay N3, 500 to be captured on the system. However, the House observed that the system was not different from the data system already operated by the FRSC. A member from Benue State, Mr. Hassan Saleh, who sponsored a motion on the issue, argued, “while Nigerians are grappling with how to come to terms with the high cost of obtaining the new Driver’s Licence and renew their old number plates with cost on the high side, the Nigerian Police pretends to be unaware that the FRSC is presently collating biometrics details of all motorists in the country.”
