ATHENS MAN SENTENCED TO 4 YEARS AND 6 MONTHS IN PRISON FOR THEFTS AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE Jason A. Simms, 39, of Athens, Ohio, appeared before Judge L. Alan Goldsberry on January 13, 2014. Simms previously entered a change of plea in case number 11CR0312 to one (1) count of Theft from the Elderly, a felony of the fourth degree and case number 12CR0233 to one (1) count of Failure to Appear, a felony of the fourth degree. On January 13, 2014, Simms also entered a change of plea in case number 13CR0346 to one (1) count of Grand Theft, a felony of the fourth degree and case number 13CR0347 to one (1) count of Domestic Violence. Judge Goldsberry sentenced Simms to a total of four and a half (4 ½) years in the State Penal System for case numbers 11CR0312, 13CR0346 and 13CR0347. Simms will begin a term of five (5) years of community control in case number 12CR0233 upon his release from incarceration. Simms was ordered to pay restitution. Prosecutor Blackburn reports that “In case number 11CR0312 on June 1, 2011, Simms approached and offered to provide services to an elderly individual. Simms was paid for the services but did not deliver the services; In 12CR0233, Simms failed to appear for a pretrial hearing on June 8, 2012, in case number 11CR0312; In 13CR0346, on October 24, 2012, through January 15, 2013, Simms did borrow over $19,000.00 by deceiving the victim into believing that he would be receiving a large sum of money; and in 13CR0347, on January 17, 2013, Simms did strike his girlfriend with whom he lived, causing or attempting to cause her physical harm. Simms was previously convicted of Domestic Violence in Athens Municipal Court case number 2010CRB00107 in 2010.” The Failure to Appear case was investigated by the Athens County Prosecutor’s Office; all other cases were investigated by the Athens County Sheriff’s Office.
