ATLANTA—A new poll shows Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal’s support is evaporating and Sen. Jason Carter’s challenge has closed from a nine-point spread to a dead heat. The poll, commissioned by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, was conducted by Abt SRBI Inc. From the AJC: “The poll has Gov. Nathan Deal three percentage points ahead of Democrat Jason Carter, and finds that the governor’s approval ratings have fallen firmly below the 50 percent threshold … It was conducted by the pollster Abt SRBI Inc. and involves 1,012 registered voters and a margin of error of 4 percent.” The same pollster found Deal leading by nine points in January with an approval rating of 54 percent. “The more voters tune in, the more they’re turning away from the governor,” said Carter campaign spokesperson Bryan Thomas. “The governor is spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on advertising, but voters are simply not buying what he’s selling. “Voters across the state are responding to Jason’s vision for Georgia’s future where we will invest in our students and look out for middle class families.” Deal is in the midst of a $1.2 million ad buy in advance of his three-way primary election on May 20. Carter, who is unopposed in the Democratic primary, is not on the air yet.
