ATTENTION EVERYONE! PLEASE READ! WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT! this past weekend, August 3, I was performing as Spiderman on the Square (as i have done many times) when I was approached by a police officer on a bike, a officer Frazier. I was cited for wearing a mask in public and fined! (City Ordinance 19-62) I have both been on the Square multiple times with multiple police presence and have received nothing but good comments from them. We are at a loss as to why NOW I would be cited for this obscure ordinance! I understand the ordinance with regards to robberies and/or non sanctioned rallies but, it was and is obvious when you see a street performance that it is just that, a performance. I was even encouraged to continue my performances by other officers before as they were excited to see quality artists come to the Square but, how can we when our costumes "obscure our identity" and we can be cited and fined? Indeed, in section (c) of the ordinance, if one wishes to protest it, this could be seen as "advising or inciting others or conspiring with others to commit an offense described in subsection (a) or (b) of this section " and result in a misdemeanor charge! And, what of Halloween? Try reading this ordinance (section b) with regards to that day! we have started a petition to get this amended to allow street performers to exercise their craft without fear of a policeman suddenly deciding to enforce an obscure law.
