AUCKLAND - ASB POLYFEST The ASB Polyfest is the largest Maori and Pacific Island cultural festival in the world, with this year’s festival expected to attract 90,000 spectators, and 9000 students competing in 200 groups from 60 schools. The festival is an iconic Auckland event, which is now in its 39th year. It is a vibrant celebration of colour and culture, which has Auckland students proudly performing kapa haka and traditional Pacific dance, while competing for trophies and the honour of being the best school group. The 2014 ASB Polyfest takes place from 12-15 March at the Manukau Sports Bowl, Te Irirangi Drive, Manukau. It will feature traditional dance and speech, and will bring the pride and passion of Auckland’s Maori and Pacific Island communities to life. Another key component of the ASB Polyfest is food and craft. Each stage has a surrounding village with the food and craft of that culture in plentiful supply. Students will compete on five stages - Cook Islands, Maori, Niue, Samoan and Tongan. There is also a Diversity Stage featuring cultural groups such as Chinese, Fijian and Indian, Korean, Sri Lankan. The Kura Matua Host school for the 2014 ASB Polyfest is Western Springs College. The theme they have selected for this year’s festival is: “Care for our seas and our lands, so that the safety of our homes, both present and past endures forever.” When 12-15 March Where Manukau Sports Bowl, Te Irirangi Drive, Manukau Cost $5, Preschool children free Website ASB Polyfest 2014
