AUDITION NOTICE - VIVA VOCE The Cape Town G&S Society is holding auditions for all those interested in participating in the Viva Voce programme over the next 12 months. Viva Voce is an arm of the Society where participants can experience G&S operas and musicals in any form of vocal ensemble. This may take the form of either an informal or formal gathering. Viva Voce gives the other performers and or production teams who are not involved in the major production the opportunity to still get involved in something connected with theatre as well as creating the environment to develop the participants in all aspects of theatre business. Some of the items on the Viva Voce calendar are: * Fundraiser for a local church (27th September 2014) * Concert version of “The Pirates of Penzance” in Mossel Bay 21 February 2015. * Two G&S Sunset Concerts in the Masque Theatre Foyer * Four community outreach concerts (at Old Age Homes etc.) Please note that being selected at this audition does not guarantee that you will perform at all the events for that year. Performers for specific concerts will be selected from the broader group depending on availability, available rehearsal time and voice parts required. When and where are the auditions? Date: Saturday 13th September 2014 Venue: Rehearsal Room 308, ArtsCape Time: 13h30 to 17h00 (all auditionees to arrive by no later than 13h30) What do you need to do? 1. Prepare any song from “The Pirates of Penzance”. If auditioning for the chorus, select any song in your voice range, please be aware that it is likely that the audition panel will only listen to a portion of the prepared song in initially assessing voices. 2. Please complete the audition form which can be downloaded from the Society’s website (gilbertandsullivan.co.za/aboutus/downloads) and bring a hard copy with you to your audition. 3. Email Philippa van Ryneveld at [email protected] that you will be attending the auditions and which role you wish to audition for. The major item on the calendar is the invitation to take a concert version of “The Pirates of Penzance” to Mossel Bay and as such the main focus of the auditions will be for this. In case you are unfamiliar with this opera, please find a brief outline below, including a breakdown of characters and voice parts. The Story “The story begins on a rocky seashore where the pirates are celebrating young Frederics coming of age. He has completed his apprenticeship and is now about to become a full-fledged member of the crew. Frederic however shocks the pirate King and his men by announcing that he is leaving their band. Frederic is about to marry his 47-year old nanny Ruth, who has constantly accompanied him since he joined the ship, but he wants her to remain with the pirates. He has not seen another woman since he was eight years old, and he wants to compare Ruth with other women. He comes upon a group of beautiful maidens, all of them daughters of Major-General Stanley, and falls in love with the youngest, Mabel. The pirates try to abduct the Major-Generals daughters and marry them. But the Major-General begs for their release, claiming that he is an orphan, and that he would be all alone without them. The pirates, who are all orphans themselves, are sympathetic to him, and they give up their plans for marriage. We find out that the Major-General lied to the pirates: he is not an orphan, and he now fears the consequences of his lie. Frederic meanwhile has arranged for a sergeant and his band of policemen to help defeat his former buccaneering comrades. Ruth and the Pirate King inform Frederic that through an unusual circumstance, he is still bound to remain a pirate. He reluctantly surrenders to his sense of duty and agrees to join them again. Mabel begs him to stay with her, but he sadly tells her that he cannot. Meanwhile the pirates have planned their revenge on the Major-General and are now coming to rob his estate. The sergeant and his comrades, although terrified, await them. All is resolved after the ensuing battle.
