AUTHOR TO SPEAK ON SHAYS REBELLION In 1786, Belchertown was near the epicenter of Shays Rebellion and many of the towns residents were drawn into the conflict on both sides. The armed uprising was precipitated by several factors -- a post-war economic depression, lack of hard currency, and harsh government policies in response to the states debt crisis. Rebels shut down several Massachusetts courts to halt the imprisonments for debt. The second presentation in the Stone House Speaker Series will be by Gary Shattuck, author of the brand new book, Artful and Designing Men which deals with the life of one of the most important rebels, Job Shattuck. This talk will be held at the Stone House Museum, 20 Maple Street, on Thursday, October 24 at 7 p.m. Hot off the press, Mr. Shattucks book will be available for purchase. Refreshment will be available and the talk is free.
