AUTUMN and WINTER with ELLE CYD The KOOLCAT. My Superhomey, My Spirit Friend. Ive never been with a cat until autumn of 2009 when I moved here in Candler, North Carolina. From the moment on, Cyd evolved into my sweet and loving constant companion—longer than most of the relationships or friendships that I ever had in my 5-decades of life--conversely, that goes with the beautiful human/s that I live with in this peaceful holly-tree surrounded idyll I call “the batcave.” I will be spending my Christmas Day here with Cyd, Georgia, Cindyrella, and her family—including Barb The Matriarch and Aunt Edna, whos 100 years old! They will be driving from Baltimore and Elkin NC. Meantime, Cyd lurks in quiet when visitors come—many times I feel shes the spirit of my Dear Departed Mother, a superstitious yet deeply culturally-mythological reminder that I also read in Amy Tans “The Hundred Secret Senses.” In the last few weeks or so, I read in staggering regularity news of deaths in the family of my longtime friends and Facebook friends. I believe the dear departed never really left us if we dont let them go off our heart. And when we do and when we dont send them away, they will always be around—many times in the warm body of a Koolcat (like Elle Cyd).
