Application Deadline: Job Description: Description and Purpose: The Audubon Nature Institute Species Survival Centers Spring 2014 Crane Chick Production Internship begins in March (negotiable). Interns work 40+ hours a week for 12 consecutive weeks. Internship is unpaid with housing available. Two interns are needed to assist in the husbandry, assisted reproduction, and chick-rearing of endangered cranes. Interns will gain valuable, hands-on experience in the captive husbandry and propagation of the endangered Mississippi sandhill crane (Grus canadensis pulla) and whooping crane (Grus Americana) for the purpose of wild release. Interns primary responsibility will be assisting in the work-intensive costume-raising of Mississippi sandhill crane chicks (feeding, exercising, cleaning enclosures, socializing, and observing strict costume protocol). Other responsibilities include but are not limited to: assisting in the artificial insemination of both species of crane with the goal of producing fertile eggs, the daily care and husbandry of the captive flock of 50 cranes, maintaining crane facilities, daily record keeping, and behavioral observations. Qualifications: Candidate must have some previous, quantifiable, hands-on, animal husbandry experience from a farm, zoo, pet store, wildlife rehabilitation center, stables, kennel, vet office, or similar. Must have a sincere interest in birds, two years college or equivalent practical experience, and a strong interest in the fields of ornithology, zoology, conservation biology, captive wildlife, or related fields. Candidate must be able to communicate effectively with co-workers both verbally and in writing, have a good attitude and exceptional work ethic, be highly motivated, and have good organization skills. Candidate must be able to understand and apply the mission of an endangered crane captive breeding program to their daily tasks. Candidate must have a high level of maturity, common sense, and a strong attention to detail. Must be able to follow direction, take initiative, and work independently while exercising good judgment. Candidate will be working outdoors in extreme temperatures (85+ F) as well as in dimly lit areas with some visual obstruction around very small chicks. Candidate must be able to lift 50 lbs., and work weekends and holidays. Candidate must also be willing to come in after hours to do evening feedings for young chicks. This is an unpaid internship.
