Aaaah the second Scherzo by Chopin ... I played this piece when I was young ... it is a difficult work to play, but the difficulty is manageable by an average student in a conservatory (I never reached a high level of piano !) ... The real difficulty is to recreate the atmosphere which Chopin wanted, atmosphere made of contrast between the times of terror and those (smaller in number) full of of grace ... and especially all those famous first lines, that Chopin himself asked his pupils to repeat countless times, while never being satisfied ....... Umi Garrett has a master of technique, and she offers us here a version whose perfection is to be compared to those of Rubinstein, Zimmermann or Cziffra !!! The construction is rigorous in the progressions, the expression is hardly controlled, and the rubato is so beautiful and subtle that I came to believe that Chopin himself had played like Umi ....... And especially look at the expression of Umi Garrett while she plays (rather than his hands): The music lives in it and through it a so exceptionally, almost supernatural !!!!!!!
