Aaaand we have an expert! ! Dr John Napier, Senior Lecturer in Ethnomusicology at UNSW will be coming to speak to us about all things anthropological and musicological on Thursday 30 October. He has researched extensively in North Indian music, specifically the documentation of katha or epic singers in Eastern Rajasthan, popular music aesthetics, and diaspora music making, as well as Latin American immigrants in Australia. To give you the flavour of the type of work he does, his most recent book is called They Sing the Wedding of God: An Ethnomusicological Study of the Mahadevji ka byavala as Performed by the Nath-Jogis of Alwar, which is a study of the ways that Rajasthani music defines and reinforces Indias caste system. If that wasnt enough, he is also an accomplished performer. He has played in contemporary ensembles like the Latin Funk band The Mambologists, the salsa band Banana Republic, the multicultural group Southern Crossings, the Afro-Latin ensemble Krakadak-Imbosima, the Indian-Western fusion group Sangam, and the modern jazz trio Stiff Upper Lip.
