Aaannd slightly happier moments before everything went steaming two-coiler shaped. Even though this mid 70s Viking console was lacking hollow state goodies for salvage (and in fact missing the turntable and speakers entirely) I couldnt resist the urge to drag it home last week. Its why I drive a station wagon. (but Jesus, am I still that fat?) Knowing that id have to reduce the bulk of the unit anyway in order to discreetly discard it, a bit of chainsaw receiver extraction seemed to make.. perfect sense. And so it was. The bits are actually more interesting than I thought theyd be. There is twice as much tuning cap (as well as a bit of the shaft that disappears under a shield can) - and more IF cans - than are required for a basic AM/FM rig, as well as largish transformers (or chokes?) of which the function has yet to be determined. They appear to be audio matching, but that doesnt immediately make sense with a transistor output stage. This will indeed be an interesting bit to autopsy some time.
