Aberystwyth holds a very special place in my heart, and it saddens me to see this. When I was there the atmosphere amongst staff was jovial (despite the national strike over pay). Teaching staff would mingle (get sloshed) with students in the Union bar, Academic work was serious, play was equally as serious. Several departments were country leaders in terms of rankings In the years since April MacMahon took over as Vice Chancellor there have been reports of a culture of fear amongst the teaching staff, and Universitys rankings has slipped considerably. Now she commands an excessive salary, no doubt justified by similar salaries in industry and commerce. However, Industry and Commerce would not accept such failings (unless its the finance sector) and she would be out on her ear. I think it is time for her to go.
