Abki Baar Hamara Adhikar? Debating rights based legislations in India Speakers: Annie Raja (National Federation of Indian Women) Nikhil Dey (Mazdoor Kisaan Shakti Sangathan) Prakash (Kachra Kamgaar Union) NL2, Friday, 28 November 2014, 3:30-5:30pm Ambedkar University, Lothian Road, Kashmere Gate Over the last decade Indias welfare programme has seen a shift towards rights based legislations that have turned governance on its head. These legislations include the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, the Right to Education Act, the Right to Information Act, the National Food Security Act and the Forest Rights Act. Each of these legislations has been implemented to a varying degree of effectiveness and there is a long way to go before these rights can be fully realised towards bringing about greater social and economic justice. However, these hard fought for rights are now under serious threat from the current establishment. Nikhil Dey, Annie Raja and Prakash will speak about ‘rights based legislations’ in India and discuss implications of the proposed changes to these laws: ie How are these laws different from previous government welfare policies? To what extent have these laws actually benefited people? Are the corruption and inefficiency allegations justified? Does India have the adequate financial resources to meet the requirements of these laws? and Why should these laws be protected from proposed changes?
