About 19 years ago I was in a car accident that did more damage than known, and over time my body has been adapting...not in a good way. My right arm has been falling asleep/going numb for about five months and Im beginning to lose strength in my hand. Ive recently learned that I need three corrective surgeries. My ulnar nerve is impinged in three locations, and without addressing this I will continue to lose ability and sensation in my dominant hand/arm. Primary source of the problem is bone spurs on multiple vertebrae growing into my spinal column and weakening the ability for the nerve to do its job. This post is to answer any questions, make this public so no one is worried about me and to dispel the little bit of illogical fear that I have. (I have no experience with surgery.) This was surprising news to me, but Ive got an amazing support network, and people all around who are ready to help while Im slightly debilitated. :) (THANK YOU ALL!) Two surgeries will be performed together - likely next week: Cubital tunnel procedure - WEB SITE: orthoinfo.aaos.org/topic.cfm?topic=a00069 VIDEO: extremely informative & easy to understand. Graphic surgery images dont begin until 4:07: youtu.be/gIncgsuHr68 Carpal tunnel procedure - WEB SITE: orthoinfo.aaos.org/topic.cfm?topic=A00005 VIDEO: excellent information, presented very well. Stop video at 3:27 to avoid watching the actual procedure: youtu.be/YVPe5WTl5yg I dont have enough information on the neck procedure to share just yet, but that surgery will be in early-October. More details will come after this first operation. I will be in a sling/brace of sorts for a few weeks while my arm heals, so please forgive my forthcoming typos thanks to Apple/Siris dictation limitations! :) Bottom line, while Im managing symptoms ok, this is a debilitating condition that continues to negatively impact my life. Its simply time to take care of it. It all sounds pretty severe, but they are very straight-forward surgeries that FIX this, plus Im apparently an excellent candidate for surgery! LOL Im looking forward to see how life will be without this discomfort. :)
